Update: Putrefaction 2: Void walker is no longer on sale and is currently priced at $7.99.
We’ve all been there, that time where you want to find something new to play but have gone through the majority of AAA titles and you’re looking for something cheap and fun. You’ve slogged through that massive list of low budget indies, but one catches your eye, the one that might be just good enough to hold your attention and be that hidden gem. You check the price… $1.59. Deal, lets get it on random game! Putrefaction 2: Void Walker is every bit as crappy as it is awesome and I loved just about every second.
After destroying ancient evil in the first game, you were transported to another galaxy and became Void Walker – a warrior, who travels to a different worlds and times in search of the ultimate enemy. Now you must work for a mysterious being, searching for clues and blasting through enemy hordes to find the answers. You’re a no nonsense warrior who just wants to kick ass, you don’t care why, you don’t care how, give him a gun and some “mother f!@#ers” to shoot.
Putrefaction 2 is a classic first-person shooter; no ADS, no aim assist, and no reloading. It’s all about fast paced action and blasting enemies in the face. It is a style of FPS that has been missing as of late due to a stronger focus on narratives and more casual aiming methods. And I for one am glad to see some classic FPS games coming back, especially with the recent DOOM revival.
You’re given a nice array of weapons and while I wish there were more of the cool alien type weapons, they vary up the more traditional revolver and shotgun type guns by adding modifiers. You collect upgrade orbs by killing enemies which can be used to infuse and upgrade your weapon strength. For example with the shotgun you can either add a charged up fire blast or rapid fire and then there are also sub upgrades to reduce cooldowns and faster charge rates. You’ll also be able to upgrade player stats such as total health, armor, ammo capacity, movement speed and item drop rate from enemies.
You will go through three different worlds and time periods ranging from Aztec temples, to demon Nazis that look like Nemesis from Resident Evil, and a futuristic alien world. Now when I say Aztec and Nazis don’t expect a typical history piece here, oh no no no. It is very stylized and over the top with plenty of “wtf?” moments. Not knowing what wacky things the game is going to throw at you to shoot was half the fun! Yes, you will be killing a demon powered Hitler and yes you will be fighting the Nemesis Nazis riding miniature Rancors. Yes you read that right, and here is the proof:
Now, everything isn’t perfect in Putrefaction 2. In fact it does have a handful of problems. The graphics are nothing special, animations and AI are pretty damn bad and some enemy projectiles will clip through walls and still hit you. But it was so easy to overlook these problems because the gunplay and enemies are so wacky and over the top I just kept wanting to play! If you’re looking for a fun, ridiculous, classic FPS where you just want to blast enemy heads and limbs off and have a good time, I recommend grabbing Putrefaction 2: Void Walker. Hell, it’s at $1.59 right now, what do you have to lose?
Putrefaction 2: Void Walker is available on PC.
